30 years ago Dirty Dancing hit our screens as a low budget film that almost didn’t happen. In 2009 the film had officially earned $214 million dollars worldwide and is still adored by millions of fans around the world (search ‘Dirty Dancing lift at wedding’ and you’re in for a treat). If you grew up in the 80s, you’ll remember swooning over the Swayze, and making it your mission to become the best dancer at holiday camp.
Granted, the film is cheesy, anachronistic (80s perms in the 60s? Come on, guys) and the script is so bad, it’s enough to make you want to gouge your eyes out with sandpaper. And yet, it works. Why exactly? We don’t know, maybe because the dance moves are sick, maybe because we were all an awkward 17 year old Baby once, or maybe it’s because the music was so damn awesome and subversive back then.
